How to figure out gematria

To get started with gematria, first determine what type of gematria you would like to study. There are three main types: ordinal-based gematria, reductive-style gematria, and full-style gematria. Ordinal-based gematria assigns numerical values to letters based on their position relative to each other in a word or phrase (e.g., Aleph = 1, Beth = 2). Reductive-style gematria assigns values based on the total sum of all letters combined (e.g., Aleph + Beth becomes 3). Full-style gematria assigns values to individual letters (e.g., Aleph = 1 + Beth = 2).

Once you have determined which type(s) of gematia you wish to explore, begin by examining what words or phrases have specific numerical values associated with them according to the designated system. Typically these will be references from scripture or related content. For example, a common phrase studied in ordinal–based gemarot is "Vayhi Eliyahu," meaning "And Elijah went." This phrase has a value of 27 according to ordinal–based Gemara calculations because its four Hebrew letters add up to 27 (Vav = 6 + Yud = 10 + Hei = 5 + Lamed= 6).
